So, I heard that GPU with proper software programming can compute much faster than CUP. Folding@home for example already have version of its tool to use GPU. So what about video encoding?

Its in the works for x264, but coding for the graphics card (even though a system like CUDA) is incredibly aggravating and difficult.

I can't wait for the day - mostly because I then have two reasons to justify buying a $1500 SLI setup - gaming and 1080p encoding :D ~MiSfit

Is it going to be Nvidia or Ati only (one or the other)? Or will it support both vendors?

CUDA is nVidia only, at least for now.

Looks like my next Vid card is going to be an NVidia. For a number of reasons, this just furthers it. Also what about Larrabee? Shouldn't that be theoretically easier to code for?

I was talking future development. Obviously not right now, as there aren't even production model's available. I just thought that it might be easier to program for in the future. Just a thought.

My bad - I didn't mean to jump down your throat :) There's a lot of exciting stuff happening for our compute bound little world of moving pixels! ~MiSfit

You're working with *proper* software, and assembly that's temperamental at best! :D
